3. Product overview

WeeklyMealBudgetPlanner is an Android app intended to help people plan meals for a week, organize groceries for those meals, and keep a self-managed food budget visible. The central experience connects a weekly meal plan with a grocery list and planned spending, helping users prepare for shopping and reduce dinner-time guesswork.

4. Problem statement

People often decide meals, track grocery needs, and think about spending in separate places. This can make weekly food planning feel repetitive and disorganized. The product should bring these related planning tasks into a clear, approachable routine without implying that it predicts store prices or manages a user’s finances.

5. Goals and success outcomes

  • Help users create and revise a plan for meals across a week.
  • Make a weekly food-budget target and planned spending easy to find.
  • Help users collect grocery items in one list for a planned shopping trip.
  • Keep the core planning flow understandable for first-time users.
  • Clearly explain data handling and permissions before release.

6. Intended users

  • People who plan meals for themselves or a household.
  • People who want to keep a weekly food budget in view while planning.
  • People who prefer a simple grocery list tied to meal ideas.
  • Users with different budgets, cooking routines, dietary preferences, and levels of planning experience.

7. Core user journeys

  1. Set up a week: Open the planner, choose or view a week, and add meals to days or meal slots.
  2. Set a budget: Enter or adjust a weekly food-budget amount and review the planned amount against it.
  3. Prepare a grocery list: Add grocery items for planned meals, review or edit the list, and use it while shopping.
  4. Adapt the plan: Update meals, budget, or grocery items when plans change.

8. Functional requirements

8.1 Weekly meal planning

  • FR-01: The app must present an identifiable weekly planning view.
  • FR-02: Users must be able to add, edit, and remove a meal entry from a day or meal slot.
  • FR-03: Meal entries must show enough information for users to recognize the planned meal; optional details must not block basic planning.
  • FR-04: Changes to a plan must be reflected in the current weekly view.

8.2 Budget planning

  • FR-05: Users must be able to set and edit a weekly food-budget amount.
  • FR-06: The app must display the budget and the planned amount or remaining amount using clearly labeled values.
  • FR-07: The app must make it clear that budget figures are planning estimates based on user-entered information, unless a verified pricing integration is added.

8.3 Grocery list

  • FR-08: Users must be able to add, edit, and remove grocery-list items.
  • FR-09: The list must be readable while shopping; item completion state should be visually distinguishable if supported.
  • FR-10: Meal planning and grocery-list content should be easy to navigate between. Any automatic conversion of meals or ingredients into list items must be confirmed as an implemented capability before it is advertised.

8.4 Data and privacy

  • FR-11: The product must explain where meal, budget, and grocery information is stored and how users can delete it.
  • FR-12: The privacy policy, Play Console Data safety responses, permissions, and behavior of included SDKs must agree with the release build.
  • FR-13: If information is stored locally only, the app and policy must not imply cloud backup, sync, or cross-device access.

9. Non-functional requirements

  • Usability: Primary actions—view plan, add a meal, view budget, and open the grocery list—should be easy to locate and labeled in plain language.
  • Accessibility: Support Android text scaling, adequate contrast, meaningful labels for controls, and touch targets appropriate for mobile use.
  • Reliability: Saving or changing user-entered plans should provide clear confirmation or error feedback; avoid silent loss of edits.
  • Performance: Core planning screens should become usable promptly on supported Android devices; set and test a measurable launch target before release.
  • Security: Minimize collected data and protect any data transmitted or stored according to the final architecture.
  • Compatibility: Define and publish supported Android versions and device requirements in the release configuration.

10. Out of scope for this draft
